Experience
Creativity in design and realization is the common thread in the life of Jeroen Broux (°1981).
In 2003 he graduated as a Master in Graphic and Advertising Design at Hasselt. After gaining 8 years of experience in advertising agencies, he began working as an independent graphic designer in 2011 with his own studio. The style can be described as strong, sleek, clear and balanced. After years of working with digital images and designs on screen, he wanted to get back to working with his hands on canvas and paper. In 2019, this resulted in a first series of paintings.
Style & process
Jeroen Broux is an artist whose work explores the essence of structure, balance, and harmony, deeply rooted in his experience as a graphic designer. In his work, he not only reflects the world in his compositions but also organizes and structures that world in a way that is both accessible and calming, for both himself and the viewer.
As a graphic designer, he sees basic shapes and geometric structures not merely as visual elements but as the fundamental building blocks of everything that can be created. These shapes represent both a limitation and a freedom: the limitation allows him to work with control and precision, while the freedom derived from this limitation enables him to discover new compositions that feel right and perfect to him.
For Jeroen, the process of creation is a search that is both conscious and intuitive. From a predefined grid, which serves as the foundational structure, the composition emerges. There is always room for feeling and experience, allowing each creation to become an organic whole. The final result always satisfies him with a delicate balance of calm, monumentality, and harmony, while also introducing an element of tension and unpredictability, challenging the viewer to look deeper and ultimately experience that same inner peace and balance.
Most of his works are characterized by a “floating” arrangement of shapes within the picture plane. This method of presentation lends the composition an airiness, a softness, tempering the weight of the geometric forms while making the whole more accessible. It ensures that the work is both visually and emotionally readable, offering space for contemplation.
Color is, for Jeroen, a subtle addition introduced later in the process. By carefully selecting colors, he can soften the composition or enhance certain elements, emphasize contrasts, or calm them. This use of color ensures that his work remains dynamic while simultaneously staying in harmony with the other forms.
Another hallmark of his work is his love for texture. Combining various textures, such as linen textures with spontaneous brushstrokes, brings his work to life. These textures create a visual and tactile depth, making the work layered and inviting the viewer to discover new facets with each viewing. It is this combination of geometric precision and spontaneous expression that makes Jeroen’s art both structured and organic, both in execution and in the emotional impact it leaves behind.
